Sustainable Aviation Fuels –Ein Schritt in eine nachhaltigere Luftfracht

One step towards more sustainable air freight

A new regulation has been in force since January 1, 2025 – regulatory environmental requirements are leading to growing costs due to more sustainable aviation fuel.

A blending rate of 2% Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) is mandatory for flights departing from European airports. This is set to increase to at least 6% by 2030. This development is part of the ReFuelEU initiative. ReFuelEU aims to gradually and sustainably reduce the CO₂ emissions of the aviation industry.

What are Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF)?

SAF are produced from sustainable raw materials such as biomass or residues and blended with kerosene. They are intended to gradually replace fossil fuels in aviation on medium- and long-haul routes. Their advantage: the CO₂ released during combustion was previously removed from the atmosphere. This reduces net emissions considerably compared to conventional kerosene.

Impact on air freight

Despite the ecological advantages, SAF also brings challenges. Airlines are currently handling the increased costs in different ways. However, additional fees are factored directly into the air freight calculation and influence pricing in the entire air freight market as well as costs for customers. However, we assume that sustainable aviation fuels will not only be a cost factor, but that they can also improve the efficiency, stability and reliability of the entire air freight industry in the long term.

As the market is still adjusting, O.T.S. ASTRACON is closely monitoring developments. We are transparently informing our customers about possible changes; currently, the exact impact on prices is difficult to predict.
