Challenges for sea freight shipments

April 2025 – the current situation at northern and western ports is presenting freight forwarders, vessel operators and consignees with significant operational challenges. O.T.S. ASTRACON is continuously monitoring the situation and providing information on current developments that are increasingly affecting the smooth flow of sea freight shipments.

Restrictions on export deliveries – closing dates in Antwerp

The terminals in the Port of Antwerp are currently demanding that export containers be delivered strictly in line with the ETA of the vessel.

  • The focus here is clearly on the rapid acceptance of import containers. However, due to the short-term changes to the closing dates, there is an increased risk that containers will be rejected if they are delivered early. In such cases, additional costs for returns may arise, which unfortunately we have to pass on to our customers.

Delivery difficulties at the North Port – tight truck time slots

In the northern port area, our transport partners are increasingly reporting difficulties in booking delivery slots for trucks. Available time slots are either very short-term or not available at all.

  • Official announcements from the terminal operators are not yet available, but the restrictions are clearly evident in day-to-day operations.

Congestion in the west port – shifting unloading windows

The situation in the western ports remains tense. Persistent congestion repeatedly leads to short-term postponements of the advised discharge windows – sometimes by up to five days.

  • These irregularities are resulting in planned vessels not being serviced as scheduled.
Conclusion

Even though we cannot directly influence the current situation, we are doing everything we can to continue to coordinate your seafreight shipments as efficiently and predictably as possible. We are always happy to help with any questions or individual arrangements.
